IBM Developing an AI Suitcase Robot to Guide Visually Impaired

To assist the visually impaired population of the world, IBM along with four other partners is developing a suitcase-shaped robot with AI capabilities. This robot volition human action as a guide for the visually dumb individuals by alerting them about obstacles alee.

The idea generated when an IBM Japan employee with a visual imparity, Chieko Asakawa, was travelling for a business trip and pushing a suitcase. While she was pushing the suitcase in front of her, a light sparked within her listen. She thought that a suitcase equipped with the relevant sensors and cameras can guide the visually impaired people to roam around places freely and without the fearfulness of getting tumbled by obstacles.

Upon consulting with IBM Nippon, a joint project was started past the company to manufacture such a suitcase that would use sensors, cameras and a battery to discover obstacles that lay ahead and alert the person pushing the instance nearly these barriers through haptic feedback. IBM Nippon will exist responsible for developing the AI that will drive the suitcase robot.

Autonomously from IBM Nippon, the four partners that I mentioned before include Alps Tall Co. Ltd., Ormon Corp., Shimizu Corp. and Mitsubishi Motors Corp. These companies will be responsible for developing the haptic tech, image sensing and recognition tech, position navigation tech and the automotive tech, respectively.

The joint venture between these five multinational companies is planning to commercialise the suitcase robot for the visually impaired by 2022. Earlier that, the potential challenges that may be faced past the companies in developing the necessary tech will exist analysed.

The companies are planning to launch the robot offset for airports and commercial complexes. They will be launching it for outdoor areas at a afterward time.
